What is ozempic?

Ozempic is a drug approved by FDA in 2017 as a drug to treat type-2 diabetes. Weight loss appeared to be one of its side effects. Ozempic is found to be a weight-losing drug when taken in increased doses. This hype of losing weight after using ozempic caused increased use of medication among the masses over time. How does ozempic works?

Ozempic contains the active semiglutide which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It’s an FDA-approved drug for type-2 diabetes. The GLP-1-like drug is used to increase insulin secretion from the pancreas in diabetic individuals and increase levels of glucagon in the blood, reducing blood glucose levels. It also reduces the chances of cardiovascular events like stroke in diabetic individuals. Ozempic is not insulin itself; it helps the pancreas to release more insulin when the glucose levels are really high.

How does ozempic cause weight loss?

Ozempic mimics the actions of the GLP-1 hormone. It maintains the blood glucose and causes weight loss along the process in diabetic individuals suffering from obesity.

Ozempic is not the primary drug for weight loss its sister medication Wegovy is. Wegovy got FDA approval in 2021 to be used in the treatment of obesity. Wegovy also contains semaglutide but in increased doses as that of Ozempic. The weight loss functions of ozempic were explored in the studies sponsored by Novo Nordisk. In the studies, one group is given 2.4mgs of ozempic while the other is given a placebo for 68 weeks together with lifestyle modifications. The group taking ozempic depicted a 15% loss of body weight compared with a 2.4% loss of body weight of individuals on placebo.

Ozempic causes weight loss by acting on the brain’s hunger centers, reducing hunger and appetite, and slowing down the process of stomach emptying, hence inducing the feeling of satiety. The final results are prolonged fullness and reduced hunger causing weight loss.

How long does it takes for ozempic to cause weight loss?

It takes fewer weeks for the results to become visible. Actually, ozempic is initiated in small doses first to minimize side effects. For diabetic patients, it’s given at 0.25 once a week followed by the gradual increase of dose if 0.5 once a week, in some patients the dose is sufficient enough to cause weight loss while in others it may not along with lowering effects on blood glucose levels. 

Wegovy works in higher doses as it’s the approved drug for weight loss. About 10% of body weight gets lost in the first 20 weeks of treatment.

What are the side effects of using ozempic?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Other may include that can be problematic are; Pancreatitis, vision changes, hypoglycemia, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gall bladder problems, thyroid tumors, and cancer.

Should I use ozempic to lose weight?

Primarily balanced diet and exercise should be opted for weight loss. But if you are unable to deal with your obesity with lifestyle interventions then you can consult your doctor or pharmacist. Wegovy should be opted for weight loss after consulting your doctor or pharmacist. Initially, a low dose should be used which can be slowly increased weekly. 

However, these medications are not recommended for short-term cosmetic weight loss. These are used for the long term treatment of obesity. Instant discontinuation of medication can cause all the lost weight to come back again.
